David Willardson's "Lennon"
David Willardson became a household name as a top
animator for Walt Disney, working on such film as Bambi,
The Lion King and The Little Mermaid . Willardson
developed an energetic and colourful graphic painting style
that not only captures the personality and emotions of the
characters but the attention of art collectors around the
"Lennon" was specially completed in May 2009 for
Wellington Gallery owner, Emil Simon as a trade for
the Rolling Stone Cover painting below that Emil
purchased at auction in Texas.
David Willardson did the Rolling Stone cover painting
in the 1970’s while working for Rolling Stone magazine.
Willardson asked if Emil would entertain a trade, since
he very much wanted this early piece back. Emil agreed, asking Willardson to paint “Lennon” (Willardson was a close friend of John Lennon). Willardson also asked his recording artist friend Michelle Shocked to complete the Calligraphy on the Lennon painting for Emil.
